Virgin Islands - Caribbean Paradise

The crown jewel of the Caribbean is the US Virgin Islands.  The USVI is composed of the major islands St Thomas, St John, and St Croix, along with several smaller islands. Most of the population of the US Virgin Islands live on St Thomas. This is the most heavily developed and modern islands. The culture is very American, yet with a Caribbean flavour that makes it a very distinct culture, and one that many more Americans are discovering each year. USVI is a territory of the United States, yet has its own independent government. Tourism is the major industry in the Virgin Islands accounting for 80 % of its economy.

The island of St Croix has the largest land area at almost 200 square miles and a population of more than 53,000 people. The population of the Virgin Islands is primarily native people of African descent. More than 50,000 also live on the island of St Thomas. St John has a small community however much of the park has been designated parkland.

St Thomas is the focus and draw for most tourists, especially those arriving via the major cruise ships. The ships stop in St Thomas harbour and shop in the town of Charlotte Amalie. This is what Charlotte Amalie is known for in the Caribbean, however it is also the hub of finance in the Caribbean region. Most locals wait until the cruise ships have left before venturing out to do their own shopping and other activities outside their home.
